Bad Brigitte!

How did I let 4 days go by without an update? Bad, bad Brigitte!

Day 44

Walk: 33:10

Day 45

Run: 28:22

2.25 mi

This needs a bit of explanation. Thursday was the first really warm day this Spring. It was in the upper 70s and sunny. Contrary to everything I know about myself, I thought this would make a GREAT time to go for a run.

But here’s the thing. The sun is my kryptonite. I overheat like a carburetor. It doesn’t even need to be that hot. So, true to form, I wilted. I had to walk a bit. I think my total run distance was closer to 1.75. bleh

Day 46

I had the best of intentions on Friday, but I didn’t manage my time well. Lucus came home from work a bit early, so we could beat the weekend crowd on our way to Santa Rosa, where we had tickets to see Mike Birbiglia. I also had a meeting with a potential new client! All told, Lucus and I got caught in traffic and barely had time to eat dinner.

Long story short: My 20 just didn’t happen.

Day 47

After spending the night in Santa Rosa, we drove to Sonoma to meet the California branch of my family. I was nervous heading over there, but we has a great time. We ended up staying 5 hours!

By the time we got back to Sac, I was wiped. We spent most of those 5 hours socializing in the sun, and it was in the mid-80s. I tried to nap a bit, failed, and basically Lucus and I ended up heating up some leftovers for dinner and watching a movie.

I don’t regret it, though. I had a great time with my California cousins (first cousins twice removed, I think) — and there was no way I was heading back into the heat once I got home.

Day 31

Ran 20:05. I’ve been taking vitamins, and it’s not going well. I was so nauseous during the run, I had to stop and walk a few blocks. After cooling down, I was able to continue.

The 20:05 doesn’t count the walk period.

Day 24

sigh. I failed to do anything yesterday. Instead, I went to bed. Tonight, I went for a run. It felt terrible. I feel run-down.

Stats

Run: 15:03

Walk: 11:16

The only reason I walked so long is I had to get back home. I punked out just past the midpoint of my run.

Day 5

I cannot believe I went from 0 to 3 days running this week. It’s a big jump, relatively speaking.

Also, how slow am I? I’m no speed demon, but this is ridiculous. Still, it’s better to be slow and consistent than speedy(ish) and barely get out the door.

Stats

Distance: 1.88 mi

Time: 21:42

Avg pace: 11:34 min/mi

Mile 1: 11:35

Mile 2: 11:32

Conditions

We went out around 6 p.m. It was still light out (woot!), and 70º.
I wore my Nike Free 5.0s…….and remembered that they are too small in the toes.

Day 3

Not much to say, other than I took it nice and easy on tonight’s run. My legs were sore, which is attributable to two factors. I haven’t run much since the fall, and I am wearing a more minimal shoe. Previously, I ran in Nike Free 5.0s, which are a bit sturdier and have a slight rise compared to the New Balance Minimus Road shoes. My Frees don’t have many miles on them, so they’ll find their way into rotation. It’s not a good idea to make the transition to a more barefoot-style shoe too abruptly. That is a recipe for injury.

Stats

Distance: 2.09 mi

Time: 24:03

Avg pace: 11:31 min/mi

Mile 1: 11:27

Mile 2: 11:35

Conditions

We went out around 7 p.m. Dark and cool (55º). I’m looking forward to springing forward. :)

Day 1

An evening run was the perfect way to kick off The Daily 20. It’s still a challenge to run more than 2 miles, but this was one of those charmed runs that felt effortless. I even ran up a hill! After only running in Chicago, this is something of a novelty.

As an aside for anyone following along, I always run with my husband, Lucus, for enjoyment, safety and utility (I’m able to collect detailed stats, because he wears a Garmin Forerunner 610). If I run alone, I’ll note it, but otherwise we’re together. Lucus is a dedicated runner. He’s currently training to qualify for the Western States 100 — and often after we finish a route, Lucus continues on his own. He’s my coach and my cheerleader.

Stats

Distance: 2.11 mi

Time: 23:26

Avg Pace: 11:05 min/mi

Mile 1: 10:41

Mile 2: 11:21

Conditions

We went out just before 8 p.m. It was dark and cool (53˚), with a light breeze.

I wore my New Balance Minimus Road shoes.
